Profile Background
Harare Central Hospital was opened in 1958 for African Population. It was built as one complex building which catered for adults ,maternity ,children and psychiatric patients, paediatrics. They had 4 wards which were situated on the ground floor .These were overcrowded since it was a referral hospital for the northern region .Soon after Independence the government of Zimbabwe found it necessary to recognise the rights of the sick child .Therefore during phase 1 and phase 11 of family health projects ,they placed emphasis on provision of health services for sick children whereby 40 new units were constructed in 40 districts. Harare New Paediatric Hospital was built to complement existing units.
The government effort was complimented by the Japanese and Canadians when they donated phase 1 and phase11 of the hospital. Phase 111 and 1v are yet to be built. It is a 350 bedded referral hospital which was opened in 1999 and caters for children referred from the northern region including Masvingo for specialist services.
